About us
At Limehouse
Medical science estimates that you gain about two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular, vigorous exercise, and rowing is especially beneficial. It’s an impact-free form of cardio-vascular exercise which uses large muscles, in a continuous rhythmic motion, to elevate your heart rate, and conditions your heart, your arteries, and your lungs. It also strengthens and tones muscles in your legs, back, abdomen, shoulders, and arms, not to mention other good things for you, such as helping control body weight, relieving depression, and helping you sleep better.
London Whalers is a loose group of people who make use of the Montagu Whaler VANCOUVER and contribute modestly to her running costs. New participants are welcome — please read all the information on this site so you can establish whether this activity is for you before contacting us.
We’re not formally constituted as a club as we don’t yet have enough committed participants to make that work, but we hope that will change. For the time being we operate as a benevolent dictatorship on the part of VANCOUVER’s owner, Dick Wynne, who has neither the intention, nor (believe it!) the prospect, of turning a profit on this activity. With luck and a good beam wind we might just pay for our mooring and wear & tear on the boat.
Need I add that we don’t practise or endorse whaling? However ‘whaler’ is the accepted shorthand for a substantial double-ended pulling and sailing boat, as used historically and in some places to this day in the hunting of whales.
The Skipper is not religious but he can be a bit evangelical about communal sail & oar activity - read his rallying tract here.
